Thought leadership is an invaluable factor of authority. Which is particularly important because people overlook it and assume that it only applies to people with personal businesses or possess specific credentials. Workers considered as though leaders either on or off the job dramatically improves their value with time, they help the situation by becoming decision leaders making the current market to consider them as experts in their respective fields. This summary explores the thoughts of Dave Crenshaw’s “thought leadership.” On how people can identify their areas of expertise and develop authority in the community and in the companies, they work in the process of becoming thought leaders.




Preparing to Build Authority

There are three basic principles in the preparation of building authority. They include; determining one’s area of expertise, scheduling time to establish authority and selecting a mentor. The foundation of thought leadership is the question “what should I become an authority in?” It is fundamental to consider one’s talent, the most valuable activities from a personal viewpoint and areas where other people find one as an expert while preparing to build authority. Personal development is not an automatic event. Instead it takes time for a person to become a leading authority and therefore people should schedule some time to develop authority. One of the most significant approaches in the development process is sharing what you know with others. People learn the most when teaching others, and thus, it is necessary to create regular time tutoring programs and devote undivided attention to the program. Little progress for example on a weekly basis ultimately results in a steady growth towards becoming an authority.


Sometimes it is challenging and even impossible to make it to success solo. In the preparation to build authority, mentorship is fundamental. Finding a person one admires and trust as a guide goes a long way in influencing one to develop authority. One can obtain mentorship from either inside the company one works, long distance or through friends who can connect us to experts in a particular field. There are many platforms where connections with mentors can be fostered, the most common one in the contemporary world is online social networks.


Building Authority within a Company

Becoming a guru in procedures and processes within the business is the primary approach towards building authority from inside the company. A majority of organizational systems are documented for the sake of recruits who may need to learn the company’s operations. Development of thought leadership starts from comprehending the organization’s systems and even recording them to help others to develop. However, documented information may not be optimal in developing authority and learning from other system experts in an organization. Building authority does not necessarily imply to mastering the already documented systems. Getting involved in the documentation through authorized company buy-in is also fundamental in gaining systems expertise. While recording the organization systems, it is critical not to include too many details but react to the “what”element of a system which should be followed by the “how” element. After documenting the system, subjecting it to a review and approval process is critical to formalize it. Different companies have different preferences regarding the way things are conveyed. Any edits made by experts or supervisors should be incorporated into the document subject, to critical reflection on why the experts change the aspects to make it consistent and accurate.


Building Authority in the Public

Upon building authority within the company, the next approach is to venture into the general public by finding ones path to mastery which is unique. A person should start from somewhere and walk up the authority ladder a step at a time. Depending on the area one has chosen to build authority, one can start writing useful reviews about products, comment in other peoples blogs and become active in them and ultimately create personal podcasts or blogs. The trick is writing on a regular basis to get noticed and recognized. Next on the authority ladder is higher certification or education that are associated with titles that communicate to people that one is indeed an expert and thus his or her words are reliable and credible. Building specialized social networks proceeds in the ladder. However, it is worth noting that the process is time intensive and patience is therefore critical. By the time one reaches the top of the authority ladder, he or she would have built a library of materials that people can use. Creating a library involves three general forms including videos, books, and articles. In becoming an authority, it is vital to building an online and offline network where one can invite or be invited by experts on events. The last phase of thought leadership is gaining personal publicity.





The goal of developing authority through thought leadership is not to become a celebrity. It is to increase one’s value by becoming a distinguished and recognized leader in one’s specialty. Authority is one of the most significant multipliers of one’s market value, and although the process takes time, it is worth the waiting because it pays handsomely in the long term.
